PDF to Word: choose editable text or page images

Decide what you need to change before converting a PDF. Correcting a paragraph requires editable characters. Keeping an exact visual reference may be better served by page images. A Word file can contain either, so its extension alone does not prove that the text is editable.

Check the source first

Try selecting a sentence in the PDF. A scanned page without a text layer needs recognition before its words can be edited. Columns, sidebars and tables can also change reading order when extracted. Note the first and last sentence of each page so you can detect missing or reordered content later.

Choose and run a mode

1. Open PDF to Word and select the PDF.
2. Choose editable text when rewriting is the goal. Choose visual pages when an image of each page meets your needs.
3. Run the tool and download the result.
4. Open the DOCX in a word processor. Place the cursor inside a sentence and select individual characters to check editability.

Compare a real editable result

Our two-page multilingual test produced 16 editable paragraphs. The original table and layout were not reconstructed; the text flowed into one page when rendered again. Compare the source PDF with the downloaded DOCX. This example was checked on 25 October 2026 and illustrates a limitation as well as a successful extraction.

Review data and layout separately

Compare names, invoice numbers, decimal marks and French accents. For Arabic, check connected letters and mixed number sequences. Then inspect headings, line breaks and page boundaries. If the task is recovering table values in cells, try PDF to Excel and still compare each important value with the source. Keep the original until the recipient has accepted the converted document.
